Affinity groups, clubs, societies, institutions and churches... Staff at Thames Water raised £155. The company matched that sum and doubled it. Staff at Marks & Spencer, Broad Street, Reading raised £2500 and the company matched that sum as well. A small division of BT decided not to send Christmas cards to each other in the office. The money thus saved resulted in a donation of £72 to us. The Legal Services Commission has also done the same and sent us a cheque for £115. A coffee morning held in Mortimer West End gave us £67 - not bad for just 2 hours work! The students of Theale Green Community School made us their principal charity of the year and presented us with a cheque for £2168.35 in December. Two further fundraising events were held in the spring and further sums were raised. A small nursery school in central London held a candle-lit sharing service at the same time as our Light Up A Life service in Reading and raised £97. 00. Golf captains sometimes choose us as their charity of the year. Recently a Reading club sent us a cheque for £798.00. Churches, Masonic lodges and groups such as Rotary and Soroptimists are generous givers. The Bank of Ireland in Reading buys our Christmas cards, whilst the family of an ex-patient here donated many hundreds of professionally printed greeting cards based on scenes painted by their relative, which we are able to sell in the House. Presentation College also donated Xmas cards. Another donated an entire stamp collection for us to resell. Yet another donor gave us pewter merchandise from her shop before it was closed that we able to sell at the Mayor's Christmas Market A group of patrons and staff at a local fish and chip shop are waiting for good weather so that they can complete a sponsored skydive and thus raise thousands for us! Keys in Caversham are among several pubs that support us with collection
boxes. Residents of a nearby close have banded together to erect a considerable number of Xmas lights on and outside their houses. This spectacular display has been visited by hundreds of people and the collection box on site yielded over £600. Participating residents are already saving up to buy even more unusual festive displays direct from the USA for Christmas this year.
