On Saturday, 21 June,
Reading Lions held their annual Fun Day at Prospect Park opposite
the hospice. At our stall we sold lots of plants and retail items
(£270). Local funeral directors Cyril H Lovegrove of Dignity provided their
sheet organ to attract members of the public to our stand. Also
performing were Reading Spring Gardens Band who will again be supporting us
at the annual carol service called Light Up A Life on Friday 5 December ,
when we come together to remember the lives of our loved ones no longer with
us. 28.06.08

Debbie
Mumford’s team at The Royal Bank of Scotland’s Call Centre in Theale chose
Duchess of Kent House as its charity of the year. Debbie said,
“Many of us have had friends and relatives who have benefited from the
extraordinary work that the hospice does. My team set about fundraising
through selling gifts, cake baking and a huge raffle. It was amazing at how
quickly people responded to this, praised the Duchess of Kent House & how
generously they gave. In a 4 week period we raised over £675! The RBS Group
has been kind enough to match the first £500 we raised, ensuring a healthy
£1175.90 donation to the charity.”

Sally Leaver
Relatives,
friends and work colleagues of Sally Leaver, who lived in Yattendon
rallied round to raise considerable funds for two charities in her
memory. Sally sadly passed away 1½ years ago after spending 16
months in the Adelaide Ward, Royal Berkshire Hospital and a further
period at Duchess of Kent House. Several fundraising activities
took place including a Lloyds Bank sponsored walk. Last December, at
the new Upper Basildon Village Hall the Angel Ball supported by XP
plc power supplies of Pangbourne where Sally worked, was held.
The proceeds of these events resulted in an amazing £ 2650 raised
for Duchess of Kent House & £13,000 for the RBH.
Duchess of Kent House Charity supports various services at the
hospices, and already this year has given extra funds to replace
ward furniture and update medical equipment to the value of £16,000.

Light Up a Life
2007
On
Friday last, Duchess of Kent House (the hospice for west and central
Berkshire) held its annual carol service. Called ‘Light Up A Life’
it is no ordinary carol service as through special readings and
music it celebrates the lives of loved ones no longer with us. Over
350 members of the public joined Newbury College Singers, Reading
Spring Gardens Brass Band and 4 Christ Gospel singers for the short
service.
Members of the public enter the gardens in near darkness carrying
candle lights and when the choir sings, ’Now light one thousand
Christmas Lights’ literately thousands of lights are turned on at
once, for the benefit of the congregation and the in-patients in
their wards looking on. Each light on the Christmas Trees and
surrounding walls represents the life of a loved one. An In Memoriam
book is available for all those who made a donation in memory of a
family or friend. The lights will be turned on each night until 12th
Night (6th January).
Donations are accepted until that date with remembered names entered
into the In Memoriam book.
Year 10 Subject Support students at the
Bulmershe School last year made Christmas cards and gift boxes to
raise money for the charity having democratically voted to support
us raising over £105. Very sadly one of the students lost his
father recently, who was cared for at the House.
Reading & Wokingham Lions
Suzanne Dore (President of Reading Lions
Club) Andy Slay (President of Wokingham Lions Club) and Alex
Woollard present George Solly of the Duchess of Kent House Charity
with a cheque for £1,166.90.
Reading and Wokingham Lions clubs joined
forces at the Reading and Wokingham Country Show in August, to run
their second "Festival Of Motoring" under the leadership of Alex Woollard who is the "Driving Force" behind this fund raising effort.
120 vehicles attended this year's event
which was lower than expected and no doubt a result of the poor
summer which hit so many outdoor events this year.
Andy Slay of Wokingham Lions said "We are
delighted to have been able to support the Duchess of Kent House
Charity again and would like to thank the Wokingham and Reading
Agricultural Association together with the people who supported the
event which has enabled us to raise funds for this very worthwhile
cause. The Hospice serves the Reading, Wokingham, Newbury, and
surrounding districts. In addition to funding two beds at the
Hospice, the charity pays for a family support service
(Bereavement), dietician, psychologist, chaplain, aroma therapist,
transport, patient outings and additional equipment for the
Hospice." 12.11.07
St Mary's, Upper
Woolhampton
Parishioners of St. Mary's, Upper Woolhampton

Very well done to all concerned. 24.09.07
15th Anniversary Summer Ball
Christine Pickett, her husband and a group of dedicated helpers
staged another Summer Ball in July in memory of Barbara Pickett. Held at Burghfield Civil Service Club 140 people,
including some of our nurses enjoyed themselves dancing to Backbeat
Band. Decorations very expertly executed in the charity’s colours to
celebrate 15 years since the unit was opened by the Countess of
Westmorland.
An
amazing £2815 was raised. Our sincere thanks to all involved,
especially Christine and family.
Running for Us
The last
Reading Half Marathon has been the most successful for the charity
financially with over £15,000 in so far, and still counting. Many also
took part in the Green Park Challenge, including James (11) and Daniel
McGregor (12) who ran in memory of their mother Debbie who passed
away here in December of last year.
Hadrian’s Wall
Louise
Marshall wrote, ‘My husband Bob, a keen fundraiser and accomplished
trekker had already decided to walk Hadrian’s Wall in aid of Duchess
of Kent House Charity, It was ironic therefore that it was just these
good people who cared for him last year when he lost his fight against
mesothelioma. Their family room gave us all a much needed place where
Bob could feel secure and spend precious time with all of us.
Six
months later Bob’s close friend Jack also died. Now to fulfil Bob’s
goal and in memory of these two good men, Jack’s wife Ann and I have
walked Hadrian’s Wall’
To date
over £1400 has been raised, with more coming in.
John Lewis
Local
partners (staff) of John Lewis (Heelas as was) have adopted us as
their charity of the year. First involvement was replacement of our
damaged sun canopy used by day therapy patients in the garden.
Secondly all day patients who went on the Thames cruise in July were
given a very well stocked goody bag containing up-market cosmetics
among other desirables. In the last few days a cheque for £2745 has
been received as well as craft stock for sale. Store charity
representatives Chris Manning & Natasha Murray plan more fundraising
for us in the near future.
Latest
staff initiative involves 7cm high bears called ‘Duchess’ who can be
hired out for £2.50 a time on the proviso that they are photographed
at all the exotic locations they travel too. Destinations so far
include Brussels and the Ritz in London!
Peking to Paris
The
doctors Marks (Annabella and Nick) successfully completed their very
gruelling 12,214 km drive over 35 days to support us and another
charity, dear to their hearts. Annabella and Nick also won the
Concours d’Elegance competition with their 1954 Lancia.
KPMG
Meanwhile KPMG via Help the Hospices continues to support the hospice
movement in general and us in particular, through the personal
involvement of Nicola Gladwell and her team. KPMG employees have just
voted to support the hospice movement for a further year, up to
September 2008. Just today we have received a cheque for £4703.
The money for last year’s Eldart Close Xmas Lights has just come in
(£764)
The fundraising manager and other members of staff give talks to
groups, companies and societies explaining the work of the hospice and
the fundraising that goes to support it.
Lions Fun Day held on 30 June in Prospect Park was blighted by the
weather but our charity stalls still managed over £400 of sales.
Reading’s Waterfest was relatively rain free and our long-time
supporter Paul Farmer was decked out completely in yellow (with dyed
hair and beard) collecting for us. During the Hospice Awareness Month
of June, Paul will have collected several hundreds for us.
The new Holybrook Festival was poorly attended by the public despite
wonderful weather, but the charity made contact with South Chiltern’s
Lions, resulting in a donation of £500 received this week.
We are noticing that some supporters celebrating special birthdays and
anniversaries with parties are asking their friends to make a donation
to Duchess of Kent House Charity instead of giving a present.
A trustee and 5 friends have just completed the British 10K London Run
for the charity

Green Park Challenge Runners
Doreen
Baker (2nd right) lost her husband Roy at the end of last year.
When grandchildren Daniel Butler and Amanda Vockins (1st and second
left) said they would run the Green Park Challenge during the
Reading Half Marathon, Doreen was delighted. Doreen is very
appreciative of the way the staff of Duchess of Kent House hospice
supported her husband and family during their time of need, and
continue to do so. Amanda & Daniel have raised no less that £723
through sponsorship of their run and all money goes to the hospice
which continues to help local patients with life-shortening diseases
according to need, free of charge. Other people in photo are 3 year
old Robbie and mother
